High Flying Hannah Takes Out the Contest While Jesus' Name Held High in
Cronulla.
High flyer Dylan Hannah of Cronulla used his aerial prowess to take out the
2006 Jesus Pro Am in one of the most exiting Open Men's finals in the events
22 year history.
In small, but very contestable offshore 0.5m waves at 'The Alley' in
Cronulla, Hannah overcame fellow Cronulla local and 2005 Australian O/28
Champion, Wylie Fowler, with spectacular surfing that included a huge air
reverse that left the crowd in awe.
Hannah was stoked with the win, for which he pocked $1000 from Boost Mobile
and a surf trip from the Surf Travel Co, saying, "It was a fun final, Wylie
was good to surf against."
Fowler, who had shown good form all event, was rapt with the event and his
second place saying, "There is a great spirit and sense of community about
the event."
Fowler won the Jesus Pro Am in 1997 and has since been twice runner-up.
Earlier, Hannah had to face 2005 World Championship Tour (WCT) surfer and
fellow Cronulla local Kirk Flintoff in the Semi Finals. Pulling out all the
stops, Hannah fought off the experience of Flintoff to easily progress to
the Final.
In the Open Women's, it was McMaster's Beach local and former WCT surfer
Amee Donohoe who was too strong for the solid Women's field. The Women's
Final was a who's who of Australian surfing with current Australian Open
champ Yvonne Byron from Figtree scooting to an early lead after a solid 7
point ride. However, in controversial circumstances, Byron's was unanimously
judged to have 'snaked' Cronulla's Lyndsay Noyes on her second wave and as
such her chances of taking out the title were seriously dented.
Donohoe picked up two mid range rides later in the Final to take the lead
and held on to win the handmade Pearl necklace from Dallas Designer
Jewellery and $500 cash.
Of the Final, Donohoe said that while the waves were a little inconsistent,"the girls gave it their best for what was there."
In what was her third Jesus Pro Am women's title, Donohoe commented that she"always liked to support the Jesus Pro Am because it is always a good
contest."
Despite the interference, Byron finished second, with West Australian Sarah
Beardmore third and defending champ Lyndsay Noyes fourth.
The Cadets Final was action packed, with all surfers notching up high
scoring 'keepers' in the first two minutes. The exiting exchange left Chris
Salisbury of Newport and Cronulla local Jake Towill neck and neck with
Ulladulla's Sam Wrench and Conner O'Leary of Cronulla snapping at their
heels. The question left for the spectators on the beach was who would be
able to secure the higher second scoring wave?
After a number of lower scoring rides, it was Wrench who staked his claim
locking in a 6.26 but it was not enough as Salisbury took what would be an
unassailable lead to take out the Cadets titles to etch his name on the
honor board alongside past winners such as Phil McDonald and Drew Courtney.
For his win, Salisbury took home $500 cash and a Line Up Surfboard.
In Australia's only Family Tag-Team event, father and son combo Elliot and
Craig Binkins of Minamurra was too strong for the mother-daughter pairing of
Hannah and Yvonne Byron in an action packed final.
As always, a huge team of volunteers, made up of Christian Surfers crew from
around Australia and local church members, worked tirelessly to ensure every
competitor was well feed cooking up a huge supply of cakes and bacon and egg
rolls right through the event.
The banner of Jesus was held high in Cronulla with 'Church in the Park'
drawing a 300 strong congregation in the park overlooking the contest site
The win-a-KJN Surfboard contest was won by Stanwell Park's Paul Campbell. To
win, Paul answered several important questions about Jesus using the Surfers
Bible.
At the Presentation, long-time Cronulla Christian Surfers leader Craig
Cleaver challenged those in attendance to respond to the 'beauty and power'
of who Jesus is just as we all respond in some way to the beauty and power
of the ocean. Just as the ocean showed its beauty and power during the
recent huge swells on the NSW coast, Jesus did so too through his life,
death and resurrection here on Earth.
